Lists. Everyone loves lists. They are easy to read, fun to compile, and you can get to the meat of the article with an easy, clever title. Although lists tend to be all the above, they also tend to be a bit difficult on the writer’s end of the spectrum. Top Tens, All-Time Favs, Goriest, etc tend to go under the editing knife more than a few times to finally narrow down and even then the writer could quite possibly be adequate in his contentment of the finish product. So when our great Editor-In-Chief Wes Allen proposed a “Top Ten Films You Would Need If Stranded On A Deserted Island” list, well…in the words made famous by Burn Notice’s Sam Axe, “Easy-peasy”.
I am a self-proclaimed “Film Nazi”. I tend to be rather extremely hard on films and not care for anything independently made post-1989 (Dead Alive could quite possibly be the only exception). Thus, when I was asked for my Top 10 films that I could not live without if I were stuck on a deserted island, I immediately blurted them aloud as confirmation. The only drawback to this list was the exclusion of films that fail to stray towards the darker solemnity of cinema . Thus, films that I adore like Little Monsters, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (still rather dark), Street Soldiers, etc were left off of the list in dismay.
So without further ado…
